We build knowledge sharing and training platforms to enhance long term health economics capacity and support career pathways for researchers and policymakers in Africa.

Thanzi capability strengthening initiatives are designed to facilitate better knowledge sharing across healthcare disciplines and support career pathways in global health. Focussed primarily on supporting postgraduate training, our projects focus on widening access to health economics training materials for students, researchers and policy practitioners in the East, Central, Southern and West Africa regions.

Our recent work is bringing regional course providers closer together to critique and co-develop MSc course curricula, and create better access to health economics distance learning MSc programmes at an international level. The Global Health Economics Hub is also spearheading better peer-to-peer networking and engagement: offering a dedicated training platform for the global health economics community and access to a library of free learning resources to aid independent study.

Alongside these initiatives, capability strengthening activities are embedded into the work of the Thanzi Programme, through short courses, policy think tanks, research conferences, and seminars. Visit the TLO Model website for summaries of previous events held by the Health Economics and Policy Unit (HEPU) at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

Global Health Economics Hub

The Global Health Economics Hub was launched in 2020 as the first ‘knowledge hub’ on the Global Health Network devoted to the subject of health economics. Serving as an online, open access community of practice, the Hub supports health economics research capability and its use within policy in low- and middle-income settings, enabling researchers and professionals working in government and various parts of the health system to access resources for career development.

Hub members have access to an impressive repository of webinars, in-country and distance learning health economics teaching materials and dedicated discussion spaces: all of which are designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the subjects of Economic Evaluations Methods. A number of advanced level materials and lectures are also available for those who already have a good understanding of basic health economics concepts.

As well as offering an open access platform for knowledge sharing, training and peer learning, the Hub has also inspired Thanzi partners to produce a report on health economics training in the ECSA region, setting out recommendations for how this platform could continue to support health economics capability strengthening delivered via regional communities of practice. Longer term plans are already in development for the site to expand the portfolio of resources and engagement activities, and updates will be posted on the Hub’s news page as these activities come online.

MSc Studentships

Widening access to international health economics training programmes is a key priority of Thanzi, to ensure that African students have the opportunity to pursue an MSc and further their career in health financing, planning, delivery or administration. To support this aim, a new initiative - the Thanzi Programme Health Economics Distance Learning MSc Studentships - was launched in 2023.

This scheme offers funded places for 12 talented African students to complete the University of York’s three-year MSc Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment (distance learning) programme, specialising in economics and related disciplines. Led by the University of York, ECSA-HC and Global Institute for Disease Elimination as part of the Thanzi Labwino (Better Health) project, the Studentships aim to improve capability among academic, policy and community stakeholders to generate, interpret and use health economic evidence to inform disease elimination and resource allocation decisions.
